High Blood Pressure
What is High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure also known as hypertension is a medical condition when the blood pressure in the arteries rise. Although high blood pressure (HBP) is common due to temporary emotional tensions or stress, there are other more significant reasons for HBP. The persistent occurrence of it is considered to be an onset for more serious chronic problems like strokes, heart failure etc. A high blood pressure occurs mostly naturally and the rest of the time is on an average a result of tumors, kidney diseases etc.
Occurrence and severity
Individuals suffering from HBP are most often unaware of it and thus affect many unprepared. Elijah Saunders expert in cardiology and hypertension at the University of Maryland, USA, said "Only about half of the people in this country who have high blood pressure know they have it, of those who know they have it, only about half are being treated for it. And of those being treated for it, only about half actually have their blood pressure under control.” The condition is a silent killer and is very often a precursor to heart disease. The human heart, a muscle, is the size of a fist and is one of the hardest working organs of our body. To reduce the risk of heart diseases and HBP , there must be an everyday effort in making the right choice of lifestyle and diet for proper functioning of a heart. A blood pressure reading of 120/80 is said to be normal or under control, whereas a reading of 140/90 and higher is considered to be dangerous.
How to control HBP?
Hypertension or high blood pressure can be kept under control with strict lifestyle modifications and a healthy diet. Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking must be avoided while there must be a dedicated time for exercises or any physical activity everyday. A 30 min brisk walk, aerobics, or visit to the gym on a daily basis helps the body function more productively. The DASH (dietary approach to stop hypertension) diet plan consisting of lots of vegetables, fruits, reduced content of saturated products along with fewer intakes of salt and fat is prescribed for healthy living. The condition of hypertension can be kept in control while also can be treated with medicines.
Over the years medical science has developed drugs to control the condition and today is much more effective than earlier. Individuals suffering from HBP have more faith in the drugs of today than the prior ones which had more side effects. ACE inhibitors, Beta blockers, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB’s) and alpha blockers are some of the new drugs patients need to consume just once a day to keep their HBP in control. However, it must be noted that medicines are not a substitute for healthy diets but is a supplement along with healthy lifestyle and should be taken only if prescribed by a qualified doctor. Thus a consistent disciplined following of regular exercises along with DASH diet plan and regular follow ups with your doctor , will result in a remarkable improvement in your HBP condition. Motivation and will power, will keep you growing strong and living healthy.
